'Forget Me Not' restaurant reopens
Watford’s first intergenerational dementia friendly restaurant – organised by West Herts College and Watford Borough Council – has reopened for diners.
The exciting partnership will continue for the foreseeable future, with the restaurant opening on the last Thursday of every month (excluding school holidays) from 11.45am to 2pm. To ensure diners have a relaxed and pleasant experience, catering students at West Herts College’s Forget Me Not Restaurant became Dementia Friends, to help provide dementia-friendly customer service and understand the challenges facing people with dementia.
Dining out is an important social activity for many people. For those living with dementia, however, going out to eat can be stressful and overwhelming. Understanding what it is like to live with dementia will help the students alleviate many issues, such as helping to narrow possible options in ordering. Restaurant professionals and wait staff are likely to encounter customers with dementia in the course of their work. In fact, 70 percent of people with dementia live within the community rather than in an adult care facility.
Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor said “I’m delighted that West Herts College are supporting our Dementia Friendly Town initiative and have reopened the Forget Me Not restaurant in a Covid-19 secure way. I’d like to thank the staff and students at the College making a difference to the lives of people living with Dementia in our town.
“Living with Dementia can make doing everyday things in life, like going to a restaurant or a cafe, very challenging. That’s why we should do all we can to make small changes to life easier for the over one thousand people living in our town with Dementia and their carers.”
The cost is £6 for three courses. To book a table for you or your family / friends at the restaurant, please call Marie on 01923 812464 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. Guests are advised that only card payments are accepted and social distancing measures are in place. Guests must also wear a face covering when entering and leaving, and also leave contact details as part of the NHS Track and Trace.
The project is funded by Hertfordshire County Council through their new health and wellbeing service 'Healthy Hubs'. Find out more about Watford’s Dementia Friendly Community at dementiafriendlywatford.com
