Students took a break from revision to relax during a wellbeing session with therapy dogs. The visit from Pets As Therapy gave students a calm space to pause and reset during the busy pre‑exam period.
During the session, students spent time stroking and cuddling the therapy dogs while chatting to volunteers. The relaxed atmosphere helped students feel calmer and more focused, offering a positive break from exam preparation.
Cassie Lewis, Level 3 Business Student said: “I was really therapeutic seeing all the dogs it made me forget about all my college work for a bit. My favourite one was the Chihuahua his name was Taco.”
Pets As Therapy is a national charity that works with schools, hospitals, care homes and community groups. Their trained volunteers and animal companions support wellbeing by providing comfort, connection and moments of calm.
Elliot Pordes, Pets As Therapy volunteer said: "The atmosphere was amazing. Watching students stroke and cuddle our dogs shows us exactly why we volunteer. We all know how much the student gets from interaction with our pets and thoroughly enjoy the impact they have.”
Activities like this play an important role in teaching students how to look after their own wellbeing, particularly during high‑pressure periods such as exams.
Sabrina Barry Head of Student Experience at West Herts College said: “Supporting wellbeing is a key part of preparing students for life beyond college. Through our Personal Development programme, we actively teach students how to recognise pressure, manage stress and use positive strategies to look after their wellbeing. Sessions like this help students build resilience, confidence and independence skills that are essential for exams, further study, the workplace and life.”
The session was part of the College’s Personal Development programme, which offers a wide range of activities to help students grow, build confidence and develop essential life skills. Alongside your course, the programme supports students to manage pressure, build resilience and prepare for life beyond college.
At West Herts College, student support goes further than academic study, helping young people take control of their wellbeing and feel confident as they take their next steps.
