West Herts College is excited to introduce its Try the Job events initiative, giving students the opportunity to work directly with employers, and giving employers the chance to work with local talent.

1. What Is ‘Try the Job’?

Try the Job is an exciting opportunity for employers to bring their industry to life on campus. It gives students a behind-the-scenes look at what it really takes to work in a specific job role – not just the theory, but the reality of day-to-day work.

2. How does the programme work?

Employers work alongside our team to design and deliver interactive workshops that simulate real working practices. These sessions might include problem-solving tasks, team challenges, live scenarios, or hands-on activities – all designed to mirror what happens in the workplace.

3. What do students gain from taking part?

Students gain real insight into different careers so they can better understand what suits their interests and strengths. It helps them make informed decisions about their next steps, build confidence, and develop key employability skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

4. What could a ‘Try the Job’ session look like?

It varies by industry, for example:

  • Healthcare: Students could diagnose a mock patient care and plan treatment.
  • Construction & Engineering: Designing solutions to real-world building challenges.
  • Digital & IT: Solving a cybersecurity scenario or building a simple app feature.
  • Business & Marketing: Creating a campaign or pitching a product idea.

5. What's in it for employers?

There are several key benefits:

  • Talent pipeline development: Engage early with future talent and inspire career pathways into your sector.
  • Shaping skills: Help influence the skills and behaviours students develop.
  • Brand awareness: Position your organisation as an employer of choice.
  • Corporate social responsibility: Contribute to education and community development.
  • Recruitment advantage: Identify enthusiastic, engaged students who may become future employers or apprentices.

6. Why should employers get involved?

This is a chance to directly influence the next generation of your workforce, while making a real difference to students’ career journeys. By sharing your expertise, you’re not just supporting education – you're helping build a future talent pool that’s better prepared for industry.

7. How can employers take part?
