A Level Law alongside Forensic and Criminal Investigation students at West Herts College gained valuable skills and knowledge as they experienced an Employer Masterclass from Innocence Project London (IPL) who are a not-for-profit organisation linked to the University of Greenwich.
IPL work on cases of convicted individuals, end of criminal justice system, and provide access to justice for people who would otherwise not be able to afford it.
The Masterclass began with a group conversation between IPL and the students about ‘What does innocence look like to you?’ As well as ‘What is your ideal perception of an innocent person?’
It continued through IPL explaining the processes around Trial in Crown Courts, The Court of Appeals, as well as the Criminal Cases Review Commission [CCRC].
The session went into another group conversation regarding ‘What does real possibility mean?’
Calum, a student at the University of Greenwich who is on a placement with IPL went on to then speak about his experiences with IPL so far.
IPL ended this Masterclass by explaining a real case study of one of its clients and delved into an in-depth conversation with students about the action of eyewitnesses and putting it into practice, as well as what their thoughts are on this.

Masterclasses such as these play a vital role in developing and preparing the A Level Law and Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation students for their next steps, through gaining real-world knowledge and skills about the industry from an industry employer.
This was evident through the buzzing atmosphere and the levels of engagement from the students.

The session was eye-opening and really challenged thinking around justice, evidence, and the complexity of real-life cases".
This session forms part of the College’s GAP programme, which is designed to prepare students for their future careers through activities such as industry placements, masterclasses (which this is an example of), live briefs, and employer-led workshops.
