Local young people had the chance to showcase their blossoming acting skills while performing their own version of Allistar McDowall’s ‘Zero for the Young Dudes!’
Stemming from a bizarre summer camp experience, the young inmates are plotting a revolution. Tired of their mundane routine followed by a long history of unrest and injustice, we spend a day watching their schedule of exercise, lessons and meals. As the day goes on, a violent future looms over the horizon.
What makes this play so different to others is there where no designated lines, which helped guide the performers to create characters, motivations, blocking, intentions, and critical understanding. The use of Chorus and live games kept the play fresh which added an extra layer of theatrical elements. The deliberate sparse set alongside the multi-use of props and set, truly breathed life into the dystopian themes of the play.
Scott Smith, Lecturer for Performing Arts, reflected on the student production:
“I was delighted with how the performances went with everyone improving with each show. It is a challenging piece with political undertones which hopefully provokes more questions than answers and the team faced these challenges with maturity and professionalism. I think that everyone enjoyed the process and the final outcome.”
