Students from West Herts College met local charities and community groups at this year’s Volunteers Fairs, with 125 signing up to volunteering roles on the day.

The fairs are the first big step in Civic Service, the college’s new volunteering programme.

What is Civic Service?

Volunteering is part of every student’s programme of study. Each student gives some of their time to a local charity, community group, non-profit or small business working for a good cause.

In return, they build the skills employers and universities look for, including teamwork, communication, reliability and problem-solving. They also grow in confidence, find out what matters to them and make a real difference in their local community.

Who was there?

Students met organisations including Watford and Three Rivers Trust, Caremark Dacorum, the National Animal Welfare Trust and Hertfordshire Children’s Centres, and found roles that fit their courses and interests.

Syed Hussain, Employer Liaison Administrator at West Herts College Group, said:

“The fairs gave students the chance to meet organisations making a real difference in our community, and the engagement was amazing. It was a great example of our new Civic Service programme in action.”

The fairs were organised by the college’s GAP team. GAP runs alongside every course, helping students build the employability skills they need for their future careers.
