Ian Foster, a local plumbing and heating business owner is highlighting the value apprentices bring to small businesses, after seeing first-hand how investing in new talent can support both day-to-day operations and long-term growth.
Ian has been working with an apprentice from the college and says the experience has been hugely beneficial for his company.
Since welcoming apprentice Toby Edwards in September, Ian has been able to involve him in a wide range of jobs, from boiler installations to general plumbing tasks such as fitting radiators, repairing toilets and replacing taps. Having an extra pair of hands on-site has helped the business operate more efficiently, while also creating an opportunity to pass on valuable industry knowledge.
“I really enjoy teaching someone how to do the job and passing on my skills,” Ian said. “It’s great to have someone learning alongside me while also contributing to the work we’re doing.”
Ian believes apprenticeships are not only about training future talent, but also about strengthening a business from within. By developing skills in-house, employers can shape apprentices to meet the specific needs of their company.
Looking ahead, Ian sees apprenticeships as a key part of his business strategy.
“Our longer-term plan is to take on another apprentice in the future, with Toby helping to support them while I oversee things.”
While the benefits to the business are clear, the apprenticeship is also providing valuable opportunities for Toby as he begins his career in the industry.
“I chose to do an apprenticeship because it interested me to get into the plumbing industry,” Toby said. “It’s great to be able to work, learn the trade and earn money at the same time.”
Through his role, Toby has developed a wide range of practical skills, including working on central heating systems and completing everyday plumbing repairs, helping to build a strong foundation for his future career.
“Being an apprentice is definitely great for the future because it gives you important skills and helps you get started in a career you want to do,” he added.
Apprenticeships at West Herts College enable employers to grow their workforce, develop talent tailored to their business needs and invest in the future of their industry.
