Level 3 Graphic Design student, Maisie Hedley, won the University of Wolverhampton’s Art & Design Competition.
The competition brief was to design a typography-based poster, conveying the message ‘Be Who You Want To Be’. Maisie experimented with printing and typography, using a scanner to warp the text to create a sense of movement and chaos. For the main type on the poster, Maisie experimented with Gelli Printing, she was happy with the texture this created and decided to use this for the main element of the poster.
Taking inspiration from designers like Chris Ashworth and Neville Brody, Maisie’s vision was to create a messy look to evoke strong emotions. She praises her tutor, David, for guiding her throughout the competition process and offering valuable feedback. Maisie said, “I value my tutors help as it has led me to progress within the Graphic Design course and improve my design skills”.
After entering the competition, Maisie was amazed to see the posters that had been created by the other candidates. Maisie said “When they called my name as the winner, I was sure they had got it wrong! I was so happy that I won, as I have never won any competitions before. I now feel more confident in my design skills”.
Maisie particularly enjoys the creative freedom she is given on the course, as she can develop her own style and experiment with different typography and printing methods.
Upon completing her course, Maisie will be heading to Norwich University of the Arts, from whom she has received an unconditional offer to study Design in Publishing. She had some valuable advice to share with anyone considering studying a Graphic Design course. She said, “Try not be a perfectionist. Before I started this course, I was a huge perfectionist, and this limited my designs and stopped me from trying new things. It is important to be open to new ideas and design methods to improve your design work. Another piece of advice I would give is to design around things you are passionate about. By incorporating your interests into your design work, it can elevate your designs and you can share your interests in a personal way”.
