Meet Tom Haylock, a graduate of the Foundation degree in Early Years.

Tom Haylock Tom chose to study a Foundation degree at West Herts College, due to its ability to offer the same opportunities as a university course, but with more teaching time. Along with the lower tuition fees and the ability to work alongside studying, Tom decided this was the ideal course for him.

While studying the Foundation degree, Tom was promoted twice from Nursery Nurse to Senior Nursery Nurse and then onto Room Leader within his job at a local private nursery. Being able to work alongside his course allowed Tom to reflect upon his own experiences within his coursework.

During the course, Tom was also able to develop his communication skills by collaborating with his classmates frequently, a skill that has benefitted him since leaving college.

After finishing his BA (Hons) in Early Childhood Education degree at the University of Hertfordshire, Tom is looking to start his PGCE.

Reflecting upon his experience, Tom praised the valuable relationship he formed with his tutors and the support they offered. His advice to anyone looking to go into the education sector is:

‘Just do it, because through inspiring and empowering children, you have the opportunity to see how rewarding the education sector is!’
