Pastry Chef at Flourish Craft Bakery

Meet Alice, who turned her love for baking into a career after studying here at West Herts College.

After a sudden need to change careers, Alice decided she wanted to learn a new skill that would allow her to find a stable job and income to support her young children.

Having always loved baking as a hobby and recently baking her sister’s wedding cupcakes, Alice knew she wanted to find a course to help her develop this skill further. She began looking for a part-time course and the Confectionary and Patisserie course appealed to her in every way.

Alice was very excited to return to education, having always loved learning. She praised the specialised environment and wonderful equipment here at college, as well as the incredibly supportive tutors, that allowed her to work to a professional standard while having the feeling of a safety net around her.

Working together with classmates with a shared passion, gave the course a real collective feel, that gave her strength throughout the course. Alice found that there was so much joy and excitement from being on the course, that helped build her confidence and made her feel braver as a person.

During the course, Alice quickly picked up a host of skills, allowing her to work in a bakery alongside studying on the course. Since completing the Level 2 and Level 3 Patisserie and Confectionary course, Alice now works as a pastry chef at Flourish Craft Bakery, where she is able to bring joy to people every day, through her own ideas and creations. She hopes to one day have a tearoom of her own, where she can create her own menus and madness!

Alice’s advice to anyone considering studying a part-time food academy course, is: “The course was absolutely worth it and it’s a great skill to have. Don’t be afraid to dive in”.
