Meet Alfie, a former student who studied multiple construction courses at West Herts College.
Alfie started his journey in the construction industry by focusing on Bricklaying at West Herts College, completing both Level 1 and 2 courses. After that, he decided to take his skills further by enrolling in the Level 3 Construction Management and Built Environment course.
During his studies, Alfie gained a mix of practical skills and theoretical knowledge. He learned about areas like engineering and quantity surveying, which helped him move from hands-on bricklaying to understanding construction management and supervision.
He was introduced to Morgan Sindall, a leading construction company, through West Herts College’s strong links with local businesses. He secured a placement at Little Reddings Primary School, where he was able to apply what he had learned, working on real projects and seeing how everything fit together.
Today, Alfie is an Apprentice Site Manager with Morgan Sindall, working on the Oak Ward project at the University Hospital in Milton Keynes. Looking back at his time at college, Alfie says the support from his tutors was a big help in shaping his career. He says, “The course gave me a great balance of practical skills and theory, which helped me move from bricklaying to a management role.”
His advice to current students is “Don’t give up, Keep trying, and don’t take no for an answer. I heard no a lot, but I kept showing up, worked hard, and eventually it paid off.”
Alfie’s story shows how West Herts College can help students take their skills to the next level and set them up for success in their careers.
