Two West Herts College students sprinted and threw their way to gold at the Hertfordshire Schools County Athletics Championships, delivering standout performances at Jarman Park Athletics Track.

Level 3 Computing student Zayn Azabdaftery powered through the 100m sprint to claim gold in style. “It was a good day at the County Champs. I felt ready, gave it my all and came away with gold,” said Zayn.

Joining him on the podium was Alana Thomas, a Level 3 Sport and Exercise Science student, who impressed in the discus event that not only earned her a gold medal, but also secured her selection to represent Hertfordshire at next month’s English Schools Athletic Association Track and Field Championships in Birmingham. “County Champs went well, I came back with a gold medal and an English Schools vest to represent Hertfordshire next month,” said Alana.

Matt Messenger, Employer Liaison Facilitator here at the college, was there on the day to support the students. “It was a fantastic day of athletics, and both Zayn and Alana did the College proud,” said Matt. “They showed real determination and talent on the track and field, and their results speak for themselves. We’ll be cheering Alana on next month as she competes on the national stage.”

A huge thank you goes to the Hertfordshire Schools Athletics Association, the event officials, and the many volunteers who helped make the day such a success.

Best of luck to Alana and all the Hertfordshire athletes heading to Birmingham next month!
