Extended Degree in Science Initial Year – Biomedical and Healthcare Science is a one-year programme to prepare you for university. This course focuses on teaching you the fundamentals of applied science in your chosen Biomedical and Healthcare Science specialism, allowing you to develop your understanding and helping you reach an exciting range of innovative career paths.
The course is designed as a preparatory year enabling you to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills you need to progress to the first year of a University of Hertfordshire undergraduate degree. After working in our industry-standard lab you’ll be prepared to step on to a full degree in your chosen discipline.
We have a range of high-level, specialist facilities including a UV visible spectrophotometer, DNA PCR machine and a gel electrophoresis analysis kit. In addition to this we have a state-of-the-art Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR) allowing you to carry out industry specific practical’s.

Entry Criteria
48 UCAS points including a Grade C/4 in GCSE English, GCSE Maths and GCSE Science.
Students intending to progress to the MPharm degree require GCSE Mathematics, English Language and Double Science at grade 5 or equivalent.
Students intending to progress to a nursing or midwifery degree require GCSE Mathematics, English Language, Science and two more subjects at grade 4 or equivalent.
Applications are also welcomed from mature applicants who are considered on the basis of employment experience in addition to formal qualifications.
