GCSE Pathway

Achieved a grade 3? You’ll retake GCSE English and/or Maths with a clear focus on moving up a grade or more.
 
You’ll follow a GCSE programme with specialist tutors, regular feedback, structured practice and mock exams — all designed to build confidence, sharpen exam technique and keep you on track for progression.

 

Stepping Stones Pathway

Achieved a grade 2 or below? You'll join the Stepping Stones Pathway a nationally recognised Ascentis qualification which builds strong foundations in English and Maths.
 
It’s a supportive, structured route where learning is modular — skills are developed step by step, with assessments taken in manageable units. This allows you to progress at the right pace, build confidence and progress to GCSE study, further education or the next stage of your journey.
 
This pathway is about choosing the right starting point to support long‑term success.

Independent Pathway

 
Already got a grade 4 or above? You won’t attend English or Maths lessons. Instead, you’ll take control through independent study using our AI learning platform Century, sharpening the English and Maths skills that power your course, career plans and next steps.
 
You’ll also take on Project Bravura — where you build and prove the English and Maths skills employers actually want. Shaped by insight from hundreds of employers across multiple sectors, Project Bravura gives you the chance to earn recognised certificates you can add straight to your CV, applications and interviews.

English & Maths FAQs

  • Do I have to study English and Maths at college?

    Yes. If you don’t yet have a grade 4 in English and/or Maths, you’ll continue studying them alongside your main course. This is a required part of your programme and helps make sure you’re prepared for your next steps.

  • Which pathway will I be on?

    You’ll be placed on a pathway based on your current grades:

    • GCSE Pathway – for students with a grade 3
    • Stepping Stones Pathway – for students with a grade 2 or below
    • Independent Pathway – for students with a grade 4 or above

    This helps make sure learning is at the right level and supports progression.

  • Can I resit my GCSE English and/or Maths exams?

    Yes. If you achieved a grade 3 in GCSE English and/or Maths, you’ll start on the GCSE Pathway and work towards resitting the exam.

    If you achieved a grade 2 or below, you’ll start on the Stepping Stones Pathway, where you build your skills step by step. When you’re ready, you can progress onto the GCSE Pathway and work towards resitting the exam.

  • When will I resit my GCSE English and/or Maths exams?

    If you’re on the GCSE Pathway, you’ll resit your GCSE English and/or Maths during one of the main exam periods in the autumn or summer. Your tutors will let you know which exam series you’re working towards and will only enter you when you’re ready.

  • What is a Stepping Stones qualification?
     

    Stepping Stones is a nationally recognised English and Maths qualification for students who achieved a grade 2 or below at GCSE. It helps you build skills and confidence step by step and prepares you to progress onto the GCSE Pathway.

 

  • Why do English and Maths skills matter?
     

    English and Maths are important skills for everyday life, further study and future work.

    If you haven’t yet achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above, they form a core part of your study programme to help you progress and build confidence.

  • How does English and Maths skills support my main course?
     

    Stronger English and Maths skills help across all subjects. They support:

    • Understanding assignments
    • Meeting assessment criteria
    • Communicating clearly
    • Managing time, money and problem‑solving

    These skills contribute to better overall outcomes.

  • What if I’ve always struggled with English or Maths?

    That’s okay lots of students feel the same. You’re not alone, and you won’t be expected to figure it out on your own. College focuses on progress, not past results. Tutors break learning down step by step, with support, practice and guidance to help you build confidence and improve.

  • What support is available to help me with English and Maths?

    You’ll be supported from the very beginning. Alongside your tutors, the college offers:

    • Additional Learning Support, including help in lessons, adapted materials and special exam arrangements if needed
    • Student Support, where you can get help with exam stress and anxiety, confidence‑building, motivation, and anything outside college that might affect your learning

    The aim is to help you feel confident, supported and ready to make progress in English, Maths and your main course.
