1. Why?

 

  • English and Maths Matters
    English and Maths skills are vital to your studies at college, you’ll be required to use your skills every day to solve problems, complete assignments and communicate with your peers. We take a fresh approach to developing these core skills, here’s why it matters to you.

  • Employability
    Employers consistently rank communication and numeracy among the top skills they look for.


    They are essential skills in all industries, e.g. Maths: Budgeting, invoices, estimating, formulas and technical measurements, reporting. E.g. English: Writing emails, placing orders, communication with colleagues, reading and following instructions.

  • Progression
    Many apprenticeships, university courses, higher level courses at college and jobs require a minimum Level 2 in English and maths. Our aim is to help you develop your skills to achieve higher grades and boost your potential.

  • Confidence
    Mastering these core subjects will help you to navigate life independently—from budgeting and managing bills to writing a CV or an email. When you leave college, you will feel confident that you can use your English and maths skills to take on your next steps.

 

 

2. How?

We combine weekly in-person lessons with AI learning technologies to provide you with the teaching and learning you need to enhance your skills and prepare for assessments and exams. 

 

  • Your weekly lessons
    100% attendance is critical to success in English and maths, you will have 2 x 1.5 hours lessons a week for each subject. 

  • Diagnostics
    We use diagnostic assessments to better understand your strengths and areas for improvement. These assessments take place at the start of term and allow us to tailor content to help you develop the areas that need most work.

  • Century AI
    Century is an online learning platform that you can access anytime, you can use it to further develop your skills by taking on nuggets. The more you use Century, the more it understands your learning style and areas to improve.

 

Depending on your current grades, you will have a slightly different approach to English and maths at college. 

 

  • GCSEs
    Students who have a grade 3 in English and/or maths will study towards GCSE resits, you’ll be enrolled on GCSE programmes and continue to work towards moving up one grade or more.

  • Ascentis
    If you achieved a grade 2 or below, you’ll be enrolled on an Ascentis qualification that’s at the right level for you. This fresh approach will help you to develop your skills and gain industry recognised qualifications in a style that better suits you.

  • Already achieved
    If you have a GCSE grade 4 or above for English or maths, you will undertake independent study instead of attending lessons. You’ll use Century to focus on subject specific skills to brush up on the areas that are most relevant to your progression plans.

3. What?

What will I study?

 

  • New content
    English and maths lessons at College are different to what you’re used to at School, we have a fresh approach to give you a new outlook on these skills. Your lessons will be varied; you’ll listen to podcasts, take part in group discussions and projects, use AI and in-class technology and spend time practicing your skills with mock assessments. 

  • Specialist tutors
    You will have a specialist English or maths tutor for your lessons, they will provide you with regular verbal and written feedback to help you understand what you need to improve and how you need to approach it.

  • Get GCSE exam ready
    GCSE students will have mock exams, attendance to these is mandatory. These mocks will allow you to gain detailed tutor feedback in preparation for your exams.

  • Get Ascentis assessment ready
    Ascentis students will undertake a staggered unit completion approach, these will be followed by assessments when you are ready to undertake them. This approach provides you with building blocks that unlock a qualification outcome at the end of the year. 

  • Project Bravura
    We devised Project Bravura to ensure that the skills we’re providing you with align with what Employers need. We work with hundreds of employers across all sectors and they’ve told us the key English and maths skills that they’re looking for when hiring. Our response is to provide our students with opportunities to master these skills and then we’ll issue unique certificates that you can use to demonstrate to employers your competency of the skills they value most.

Next steps 

Good English and maths skills are directly linked to enhanced prospects and increased earning potential. The National Literacy Trust complied a report on the UK economy and found:

  • Having formally recognised Maths and English qualifications can make the difference when applying for a job or promotion you may want. 
  • People with good Maths and English skills earn approximately £2,000 more than those who don’t.

Maths and English are central to work and life. That’s why we continue to work with you on these core subjects, a fresh start and continued effort will lead to better life chances, greater achievement and boosted confidence.

English & Maths FAQs

  • Can I resit just GCSE maths?

    Yes, if you have achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE English and have not yet a grade 4 or above in GCSE maths you will be timetabled to study and entered to resit just GCSE maths.

  • Can I resit my GCSE exams?

    Yes, if you haven't yet achieved GCSE grades 4-9 in English or maths you will retake your GCSE exams in the Autumn or Summer series.

  • Can I resit just GCSE English?

    Yes, if you have achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE maths and have not yet a grade 4 or above in GCSE English you will be timetabled to study and entered to resit just GCSE English.
