A West Herts College tutor has appeared in a national campaign by Sky Sports and the Department for Education (DfE), highlighting the vital role of further education (FE) teachers and inspiring the next generation of skilled professionals.
Stuart Carter, Carpentry tutor at our Hemel Hempstead campus, took part in a football-themed construction challenge alongside football legends Theo Walcott and Izzy Christiansen at Slough Football Club. Combining football drills with a hands-on building task, Stuart guided the pair through constructing benches as quickly and accurately as possible, demonstrating that construction, like football, requires skill, precision, and creativity.

Reflecting on his experience, Stuart said:
“We all had a great time. Adam’s broadcasting and hosting experience put everyone at ease, which made the filming feel really natural. It was a fun way of showing the skills and challenges involved in training within FE. The production team, the footballers and the Department for Education representatives were all incredibly welcoming. I might not make it on Sky Sports for my footballing ability, but I managed it through carpentry!”
Stuart also spoke about his journey into teaching and what motivates him to work in further education. Having spent most of his career in the construction industry, he has now been teaching for nine years, passing on his knowledge and helping to develop the next generation of tradespeople.
When asked what he enjoys most about being an FE trainer, Stuart added:
“The best part is seeing former apprentices or students keep in touch. It’s a rewarding feeling knowing you’ve helped someone progress in their life and become a skilled tradesperson.”
Just like in football or construction, mastering a craft takes practice, patience, and guidance from someone with real experience. Teaching in further education is about passing on that knowledge and helping learners reach their full potential.
This campaign with the Department for Education and Sky Sports highlights the role FE plays in developing future talent, with professionals like Stuart inspiring the next generation through real-world skills.
West Herts College encourages experienced professionals to consider a career in further education. By sharing your expertise, you can inspire learners, pass on essential skills, and make a lasting impact.
