We’re excited to share that Mia Fitzgerald, a first year Interior Design and Architecture student, has won the Abacus Creative Resources Art Students Competition!
Mia is currently in her first year studying Level 3 Interior Design and Architecture, and she’s already learned so much about design. The opportunity to enter the competition came after completing a shelter project for her course. Encouraged by her tutors, she decided to submit her design, and it was selected for recognition.
Mia’s winning design is a wooden shelter for Cassiobury Park in Watford. The shelter was created to blend seamlessly into the park’s natural surroundings while being accessible to everyone, including pets and wheelchair users. Her inspiration came from a shelter in Israel by Ron Shenkin Studio, where she was drawn to the idea of using a tree shaped pillar to represent the strength and power of nature.
Winning the competition made Mia feel incredibly proud and more confident in her abilities, especially as this was her first architecture project since starting the course. It has motivated her to keep pushing herself and improving her skills for future projects. Mia also shared how much support she received from her tutors, who encouraged all the students to enter the competition.
Although Mia isn’t yet sure what she wants to do after college, she knows that she wants to continue exploring design, whether that’s at university or in a professional setting.
For anyone thinking about studying Interior Design and Architecture, Mia’s advice is to "be creative, ask lots of questions, and do plenty of research. The more research you do, the better your design will be. It’s challenging at times, but it’s also really fun!"
