The motor vehicle industry needs professionals in a wide variety occupations from garage and shop floor positions to technical development. It’s also a sector in constant need of bright young people committed to building their careers around cars.

On this course you’ll be taught through a mix of theory and practice, with continual assessment culminating in an IMI examination at the end of the year.

  • Entry Criteria

    Successful completion of Level 1 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance, plus a range of relevant assessments at interview.

  • What will I study?

    Our motor vehicle engineering workshops are well resourced and kitted out with industry-standard equipment including high-spec computerised diagnostic tools. Qualified staff have a wealth of trade and industrial knowledge which they’re keen to pass on.

    Your assessment will be made up of practical tasks and online testing, and you’ll study the following mandatory units:


    • Knowledge of health, safety and good housekeeping in the automotive environment
    • Skills in health, safety and good housekeeping in the automotive environment
    • Knowledge of support for job roles in the automotive environment
    • Skills in supporting job roles in the automotive environment
    • Knowledge of materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices used in the automotive environment
    • Skills in materials, fabrication, tools and measuring devices used in the automotive environment

    You’ll also undertake several specialist units, which could include:


    • Knowledge of routine light vehicle maintenance
    • Skills in removing and replacing light vehicle engine units and components
    • Knowledge of removing and replacing light vehicle chassis units and components

    Optional units include:


    • Skills in overhauling light vehicle mechanical units
    • Skills in overhauling light vehicle transmission units
    • Knowledge of inspecting light vehicles using prescribed methods
    • Skills in removing and replacing light vehicle driveline units and components

  • Future Prospects

    Study an apprenticeship with an employer to complete the NVQ Level 2/3 in Vehicle Mechanical and Electronic Systems. With continued study you could be looking at a career across a range of specialisms: vehicle servicing, repair and renovation, brakes and exhaust fitting, breakdown services, MOT testing, servicing management.

    Alternatively, progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles at College.
