  • Entry Criteria

A basic knowledge of BSL is required. We would recommend completing our Introduction to British Sign Language course.

  • What will I study?

You will cover a range of useful topics and by the end of the qualification you will be able to:

    • understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL
    • take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL
    • give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL
    • give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL.

There will be some flexibility to tailor the specific topic areas to the needs of the particular group.

No materials other than a pen and paper are necessary. It is strongly recommended that the vocabulary and phrases studied each week are reviewed between classes in order to get the most out of this course.

  • Future Prospects

After completing your British Sign Language Level 1 Award, you’ll be able to use BSL to communicate with deaf individuals. You’ll be able to cover a range of themes that involve simple, everyday language use.

Whether you want to support and communicate with a deaf loved one, offer inclusive communication to those with hearing loss in the workplace, or simply learn a new skill to broaden your horizons, this course equips you with the tools to engage confidently in basic BSL conversations.
