WHC student selected for IPC Athletics European Championships
West Herts College Foundation Degree Sports Studies student Mitchell Dutton (Athletics - Ambulant Javelin) has been selected to represent Team Great Britain in the IPC Athletics European Championships in Grosseto, Italy, from 10-15 June.
Mitchell, aged 20, is in his first year studying for a Sport Studies foundation degree at the College. He is very excited and cannot wait to represent Great Britain later this month: “I feel really privileged and proud to have been selected to represent my country. All my hard work has finally paid off. I’m not stopping there though – I’m also waiting to hear if I have been selected for the Rio Paralympic Games. I enjoy the practical side of the course, particularly sports coaching. I’m hoping to work in this field after graduation, coaching athletics to the younger generation”.
Charlotte Haffenden-Gale, Programme Manager, Foundation Degree in Sports Studies at West Herts College, said: “The staff who have contributed to Mitchell’s first year of learning on the Foundation Degree in Sports Studies at West Herts College feel extremely proud to hear of his recent selection for the IPC Athletics European Championships. Mitchell works hard to maintain a balance between his training and continued higher education and is thoroughly deserving of his place on the team to represent Great Britain. He has shown particular commitment and enthusiasm towards his coaching module and has indicated he has aspirations of coaching youngsters as a future career. We wish him every success during competition in Italy and continue to keep everything crossed that his dream of becoming an Olympic competitor will come true this year also.”
“Mitchell is not the first Olympic hopeful that has studied the Programme. Michael Pope who graduated from his Foundation Degree in Sports Studies in 2015 also hopes to be selected for the Rio Olympics later this year. In addition we have supported and continue to do so, a number of other talented young athletes on our programme including semi-professional footballers, county cricket players and national swimmers. We take pride in ensuring the students are able to commit to both their academic studies while continuing with their athleticism in which ever field they excel in.”
