Success for Property Maintenance apprentices on new apprenticeship standards

Alfie Devane and Billy Soden recently completed their Level 2 Property Maintenance Apprenticeship and received outstanding feedback from the visiting City and Guild assessor. Both students received their assessment outcomes, achieving distinction grades and are delighted with the result.

Alfie reflected on the theoretical knowledge he picked up during his apprenticeship and how he has applied it in the workplace: “You develop skills such as taking correct measurements, analysing risks and even filling out work sheets specific to your job at college. This enabled me to carry those skills into my work environment – and to be more independent at work.”

But apprenticeships aren’t just about theory, the practical skills required for the job role are refined in college. Billy made huge progress over the course of his apprenticeship and surprised himself with the level of his achievement: “I came from a background where I hadn’t even picked up a hammer, so to be able to come out of this apprenticeship with the skills that I have learnt and a qualification is a great feeling.”

Head of School for Building Services, Glenn Roger, was immensely proud of the achievement of the two apprentices and particularly pleased with how the new apprenticeship standards have been rolled out. “Undoubtedly, one of the main advantages of the new apprenticeship standards, is the flexibility to adapt training to meet the needs of individual employers. The School of Building Services are not only prepared to deliver the highest standard of training, but want to work closely with employers to tailor training where required.”

Billy and Alfie have both impressed at their respective employers and will be continuing to develop as newly graduated apprentices. Billy is working in a caretaker role at Bedmond Academy whilst Alfie has continued his successful year by recently being named Employee of the Year at Jury’s Inn Hotel Group.
