We’d like to introduce you to our Science tutors!

We are proud to have a professional team of tutors who are passionate about making a difference to the lives and careers of all our students.

Our tutors come from various backgrounds, each with something different to offer our students.

 

Alex Chaplin

Forensic and Applied Science Tutor 

"I have a BSc (Hons) in Chemical Sciences from UEA, a postgraduate certificate in education and a National Professional Qualification for Headship. I played rugby and basketball for my university and in the early part of my teaching career coached squash. My teaching has been mainly in secondary schools where I have had many jobs including; Head of Science, Head of Sixth Form, Deputy Head, and acting Head of Year of a large comprehensive. I am also a trained science subject learning coach."

 

 

 

 

 

 

Jennifer Rees

Forensics Tutor and Programme Manager of the Extended Degree in Science

"I completed my Psychology BSc (Hons) at Sussex University before completing my professional Postgraduate studies in Psychotherapy. I previously taught Police recruits on the Certificate in Knowledge of Policing course, teaching topics such as interviewing techniques and dealing with victims and suspects. In 2015, I was one of 50 Healthcare Professionals selected to write Whitepaper recommendations for the NHS. I was appointed Vice Chair of the mental health subcommittee, the Mental Wealth Initiative, and I presented the paper in the Houses of Parliament in December 2016. I am currently a member of the Board of Trustees for Signpost Counselling Charity."

 

 

Mark BeHarry

Applied Science Tutor

"I have a keen interest in education and have always enjoyed learning, as this allows me to gain and improve on new skills. I have a BSc (Hons) in Forensic Science from the University of Lincoln; hold DNA Typing Certificates from the EU, Certificate in Knowledge of Policing from Bucks New University, and a Level 3 National Diploma in Uniformed Public Services. In addition to my degree I have five years experience as a Special Constable for Thames Valley Police. I have had a great interest in criminal investigation and spent some time while at university with the FSFG in Guatemala.

 

 

 

Rosanna Wright

Senior Lab Technician 

"After obtaining a BSc in Food Science at London South Bank, I worked mainly in the Dairy and Brewing industries as a Lab Technician in R&D, an Analytical Chemist, and Sensory Analyst. During a career break to raise a family, I helped set up and run a support group for deaf children and their families, running speech and communication classes. This inspired me to go into education, and I went on to be a Teaching Assistant. The call of the laboratory soon took a hold, and I became a School Science Technician for 7 years before I came to West Herts College. I now manage the College laboratories which includes setting up experiments and supporting learners."

 

 

Lenali Wickramatunga

Applied Science and Extended Degree  Science Tutor 

"I have a PhD in Chemistry, from Cardiff University in the field of coordination and organometallic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. In addition to this, I have a First Class in Postgraduate certificate in Education (PGCE/PCET) from Cardiff University. Prior to this position at West Herts College, I worked as a teaching assistant at Cardiff University (School of Chemistry) and as a Science lecturer in Cardiff and Vale College. I teach BTEC Level 3 Applied Science and Extended Degree classes. I am also an associate member of the Royal society of Chemistry."
