Meet our Music Tutors

We’d like to introduce you to our Music tutors!

We are proud to have a professional team of tutors who are passionate about making a difference to the lives and careers of all our students.

Our tutors come from various backgrounds, each with something different to offer our students.

Steph Carter

Steph studied music production, songwriting and performance at the university of Hull. He graduated with a BA (Hons) in Creative Music Technology in 2007. In 2006 he joined Gallows. During his time in Gallows Steph had written and released 3 critically acclaimed albums across 2 major record labels, toured the world sharing stages some of the best musical acts, including Rage Against The Machine, Amy Winehouse, Cypress Hill and Ozzy Osbourne. Gallows went on to headline festivals across Europe and USA, including Reading & Leeds. Steph’s love of creating music drives his constant and dedicated pursuit of all walks of industry work including self-releasing multiple tracks with the band The Ghost Riders in the Sky.  An accomplished recording, mixing and mastering engineer with an ever-expanding portfolio of recorded work.  Steph’s industry experience on the stage mirrors his work as a tour manager, backline technician, events coordinator, and educator. Steph is still actively involved in the industry as a consultant for recording studios set up, education establishments and he still performs in the band Lyoness. His industry experience and contacts help the college run a diverse programme of industry days, events, masterclasses and workshops.

 

Alisdair Brown

I gained my 1st class Bsc (Hons) Degree in Music Technology from Coventry University. After graduating I moved on to manage local recording studios and live events with a focus on developing up and coming young musicians and teaching Music Technology.

 

 

 

Through this role I worked to develop music provision and opportunities for young bands and artists in the local area, as well as provide professional studio services for the local music scene. This lead to me completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Youth Work, Community learning and Development, before moving on to my current role at West Herts College teaching across the Music and Music Technology courses.

 

Dan Morgan

Dan is our Technical Coordinator, overseeing and carrying out repairs and upgrades in our industry-standard facilities. Outside of West Herts College, Dan works as a technician and engineer setting up and working on stages at festivals such as Glastonbury.

 

 

 

 

Jason Houlihan

I’m a multi-instrumentalist and former West Herts music student who achieved distinctions at Level 2 and 3. Since 2010 I have written music in a variety of genres and bands and touring the UK, Europe and playing a variety of festivals in the UK supporting bands such as Don Broco, Saving Aimee, Room 94, Enter Shikari, Twin Peaks, Lower Than Atlantis. I have also been session guitarists for artists such as Alex Clare, Luke Quinn, as well as assisting on tours with Tyler, the creator, Sneakbo, Kind Charles, Solange, Tyga, Liv Dawson and Tory Lanez. Working behind the scenes on tours in such differing genres has given me key insight in to employability across the industry. I am currently studying my MA at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in music tuition which is helping the department synthesise a variety of different pedagogies in to our delivery methods. Along side my current role I own a private teaching business specialising in vocals, guitar, keys and DAW skills.

 

 

Dan Foord

Since 2001 Dan has performed at the highest level from Arena support tours with Slipknot, a Stadium support with Slayer to main stage Download, to many extensive UK Headlining tours. Also touring the USA, South America, Europe, India, Nepal, Japan, Australia, South Africa and the Philippines.

As a recording artist Dan has been making records for over 15 years with Sikth and others including Iron Maidens Adrian Smith, Deftones Steph Carpenter. Dan is an experienced clinician and also teaches at BIMM London, having previously taught at Drumtech and ACM. In 2014 Dan self-released his own drum instructional book and DVD, developed from his own drum exercises based on his unique style of drumming.

 

 

Matt Bown

I am an experienced multi-instrumentalist who has been gigging and touring within the UK since 2015 with a variety of musical acts spanning a wide range of genres. One of my bands has performed at festivals, sharing bills with established acts such as Razorlight, Trash Boat, Mallory Knox, Milk Teeth, Gold Key and The Fratellis. I also perform with a band that has been featured on Sofar Sounds’ YouTube channel with footage from live performances recorded in London and Paris.

 

 

Taichi Imanishi

Dr Taichi Imanishi was born in Japan and lived there until he became 16. He then moved to England to study GCSEs and A-Levels. He studied BA applied psychology and sociology at the University of Brighton, the master of performance in percussion studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, PGCE at the Middlesex University, and the PhD in musicology/ethnomusicology with composition under the supervision of the leading ethnomusicologist – Keith Howard, at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He has studied with finest international musicians including David Corkhill, Simon Limbrick, Richard Benjafield, Adrian Spillett, Hiromi Harashima, Tatsushi Kimura, Julian Philips and Professor Keith Howard.

As a percussionist, he has performed in various venues including the Barbican hall, the Brighton Dome, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Birmingham Hall. He has collaborated with renowned musicians and individuals including Hibiki Ichikawa and Tanroh Ishida. As a composer, he has won second prize at TIAA All Japan Composition Competition, and has worked for theatre, film, and concert music. As a musicologist/ethnomusicologist, his interest is cross-cultural music-making for Western and Japanese classical music. His PhD dissertation explores Toru Takemitsu’s musical concept – portable and non-portable music, carrying out two composition projects in the UK and Japan.

 

 

Taylor Chambers

I’m a former West Herts College student who started on the Level 2 Music Technology course in 2012. I then progressed onto the Level 3 & HND qualifications in Music Technology throughout the academic years of 2013 – 2017.

I then advanced onto studying and achieving a 1st class (Hons) Degree as a Music Technology Specialist at the University of West London. Upon completing my degree, I’ve ventured into freelance based work for music and stage production companies, gaining portfolio credits from the likes of Snoop Dogg, Guns N Roses, and YouTubers like KingKennyTV from BetaSquad.

 

Robert Smith

Robert Smith is a specialist in song writing and music production and he has a first class BA(Hons) Degree in Music Industry Management and Studio Production. He has over seventeen years’ experience teaching music production and technology in Further Education.

 

 

Who we work with...

We have recently upgraded our Music Studios and have partnered up with a number of companies including: Focusrite, Warm Audio, Marshall Amplification, Eden Amplification and Natal Drums. Along as the studio upgrades , West Herts College is now an AVID learning partner.
