International Fashion Competition finalist
Nicholas Betts, a former Level 3 Fashion student, has received industry recognition since leaving West Herts College two years ago. Nicholas has recently been picked as a finalist for the design competition hosted by the International Foundation of Fashion and Technology. He has been invited to the event taking place this April in Shanghai, where his piece will be exhibited and featured on a catwalk show.
In his first year studying Pattern Cutting at the London College of Fashion, Nicholas came top of his class. As a result, he was one of ten students sponsored to travel to Shanghai for a month long fashion course. Whilst there he learnt how to cut and make a variety of traditional Chinese garments.
It was only upon returning to the UK that Nicholas discovered he had been named as one of the finalists. “News of making it to the final has come as a wonderful surprise! Shanghai is a vibrant and rising player in the future of fashion, so I am thrilled to be returning for the final in April.”
“It has taken a great deal of personal commitment to get to where I am now, yet I owe a lot to my time at West Herts College. With the help of the dedicated staff in the Fashion department I have gained invaluable practical knowledge, making the transition into higher education seamless. I still keep in contact with my tutors - they have always been a great support and are always happy to hear of my progress.”
Nicholas has high aspirations for his future in fashion: “I shall be undertaking a paid internship in the summer. Beyond my final year, I aim to find work in the US and ultimately establish my own menswear label."
Hannah Biggs, Art and Design Programme Coordinator, is delighted with Nicholas’ achievements: “Nic was always ahead of the wave during his time here. He worked incredibly hard, and was a very independent student. We’re so proud that the hard work has paid off, and we had no doubt that he was going to be a success.”
