HE Students Present Work Based Learning Projects
Higher Education IT and Business students were tasked with expanding, developing and applying their skills by working with a local employer in a work based project.
The aim of the project was for the students to develop an idea that will be significantly beneficial to a business of their choosing, as well as relevant to their specialised area of study. By working with their chosen business, students worked to improve and advance their project management skills, through drafting a proposal, devising a time plan and setting objectives, conducting a literature review, conducting research, and finally presenting their project.
Foundation degree Computing Technologies student Shuk Mei Lam, developed her project for Barnet Café, who are hoping to open a second café at a different location. Her aim was to establish Wi-Fi at the two café’s in order for her client to share information from one café to the other safely and securely. About the project Shuk said: “This was a really beneficial project in regards to my development. Before I started, I didn’t realise how much went into setting up a network, it was a fantastic opportunity to work through the process.”

Foundation degree business student Georgia Hickey also felt that the project helped her to focus on her desired career path saying: “It was great to explore the topic of motivation and reward, as it’s something I find fascinating. Especially as someone who aspires to a career in Human Resources.” Georgia’s project centred on the correlation of reward schemes and employee motivation at JD Sports Watford.
