Half-term round up at West Herts

After a hugely successful first half-term of the 19/20 academic year, here are some of our curriculum highlights!

Food Academy practice service for large tables

Level 3 Professional Cookery students served a huge 57 people at Watford Golf Club, practicing their technical skills as well as their ability to work under pressure, producing high quality dishes to timed service deadlines and service presentation.

Supported by Hospitality students who also got involved on the day by providing an excellent hosting service. This experience was great for them to perfect customer service skills to large groups.

Level 2 and HE Music students come together

Our Level 2 Music Practice students began producing a recording project with our HND Music students. Taking on the roles of performers, engineers and producers the two groups came together to expand their skillset and practice teamwork – we can’t wait to hear what they create!

Level 3 Film and TV students produce innovative new adverts

West Herts TV and Film students were tasked with filming a new, fresh advert for an existing brand or product. Students planned the frames, wrote scripts, filmed and edited their adverts in groups of three. Check them out here and here!

Hair and Media Make-up students join forces with Photography

Our Level 3 Hair and Media Make-up students organised and designed looks for an exclusive catwalk event at the college and were supported by Photography students who caught the event and creative looks on camera.

Celebrity chocolatier Mark Tilling hosts part-time masterclass

Part-time Food Academy students were treated to a private masterclass with Mark Tilling, a famous UK Chocolatier. Mark shared his tips and tricks on how to best mould, flavour and decorate chocolate – after four hours, students produced fabulous chocolate decorations and masterpieces!

Real Talk gets underway for its second year

Four departments have once again come together to help produce a student lead talk show, Real Talk. Starting with Film and TV students organising sets, lighting and recording equipment, our Performance students also got involved by filling the role of hosts and presenters. Closely supported by Journalism students who got to the heart of the chosen subjects by conducting professional and insightful interviews, while Hair and Beauty students were on hand to get everyone camera ready!

Royal Navy chefs work with Level 1 and 2 Professional Cookery students

Level 1 and 2 Professional Cookery students were visited by Royal Navy chefs, who helped them create a typical meal on the job. They also got the chance to discuss possible career options in the Navy.

Gaming students head to UK’s biggest industry event

Our Level 3 and HND Digital Gaming students travelled down to the UK's biggest gaming event, EGX! A fantastic opportunity for students to attend industry talks, a careers fair and enjoy talking with developers, it was a fab opportunity to see what's happening in the industry.

Performance students enjoy a night at the theatre!

A group of the Level 2 Musical Theatre students got the chance to see Brooklyn the Musical in London. A great opportunity to highlight the professional application of practical techniques and analytical processes that they study in class.
