College students host Watford Chamber of Commerce meeting
The Watford and Herts Chamber of Commerce came together in January for the first networking event of 2019. Hosted at MetroBank on Watford High Street, dozens of local employers were in attendance to talk about the latest business developments in the area, as well as how businesses can support each other to provide a better service for the local community.
West Herts College students were invited to help manage the front of house by greeting guests on arrival, managing registration and networking with local employers to explain the concept of GAP – the college’s work experience programme.
The opportunity gave students the chance to talk to a wide variety of employers across a broad range of industries and find out what it takes to secure employment after college or university. The students impressed many of the attendees with their professionalism and interest in the different sectors working together in Watford.
Paige, one of the students helping on the day, impressed new chamber members, Sarratt Office supplies, so much that she was offered a work experience placement with them.
The students were rewarded for their hard work with the opportunity to win tickets to see Watford FC play at Vicarage Road from the comfort of a luxury suite. A bit of friendly competition saw the students vying against each other to collect as many business cards as possible, the two students who collected the most cards claimed the prize.
Head of Student Employability and Progression, Sue Hill, said of the event “It was amazing! It provided students with outstanding opportunities to network with employers. Chris Luff, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce was keen to engage with them. Chris’ competition saw the students network and ask questions, which really took them out of their comfort zone, they don’t usually experience this kind of exposure.
As a result of our involvement, we are how hoping to work with a further 70 local Chamber members, and would like to thanks Chris, Izzy and Saffron for enabling us to have such a positive and fruitful morning.”
The event was a great success with students and members of the Watford and Herts Chamber of Commerce alike making important links within the local community. You can find out more about the Watford and Herts Chamber of Commerce and upcoming events by clicking here.
