College student wins award at WorldSkills finals
West Herts College student Chris Evans, was awarded the silver medal at ‘WorldSkills’ UK National Finals at The Skills Show. Chris competed in the advanced heat for electrical installation, against ten other competitors from across the country at The NEC, Birmingham.
After entering the competition last year, Chris was unfortunate to be eliminated at the regional stage “I didn’t understand last year fully how the process worked. Although my work was to a good standard, I was waiting for the panel of judges to say stop or time up, but I had to say function, to let the panel know I had completed.”
Successfully qualifying from the regional heat this year, Chris was prepared and determined to succeed at the national finals. Chris recalls how the competition was tough for all involved "About half of us managed to complete the install and test, but nobody completed the main task as we all run out of time." Chris' efforts proved to be worthwhile though, as he was awarded the silver medal.
The event spanned over 3 days with skill competitions and team exercises across a range of electrical installation techniques. Chris particularly enjoyed the team exercises "They didn't affect the final results and were just to get members of the public to get involved with the competitors and enjoy themselves."
Chris thoroughly enjoyed the event and was thankful to the College for all the support provided. “All in all was a great experience and I made some good friends. The support from the college was brilliant, it was great to see my tutor Tony Greene and Bev Cannon make it to the award ceremony. Tony has been a great support throughout the whole of my WorldSkills heats and competitions and I would like to thank him once again!”
Congratulations Chris on this fantastic achievement!
