Civil Engineering students make the most of Poise work experience placement
Two West Herts College Level 3 Civil Engineering students, William Stubbs and Edward Holdnerness, have been undertaking a GAP work experience placement at Poise UK, one of the UK’s largest engineering companies. The placement has given the students a taste of what may be to come for them, whilst developing their confidence and building on their existing skills.
Poise is based in London and have engineers in numerous fields who focus on completing efficient, safe and economically viable projects. Over the course of the six-week placement, the students have been given an insight into the company’s day-to-day operations and have learnt about some of the professional demands of working as an engineer.
Trina Tiernan, one of our GAP Facilitators, said: “Before starting the placement the boys were apprehensive, however they’ve really thrown themselves into it and their confidence has grown massively. Working for a large company like Poise will be a crucial part of their progression into the world of work.”
“The placement has created a real buzz. Poise are interested in taking on more of our students and the students are eager to work for them.”
Throughout the placement, William and Edward have taken part in a variety of roles in the Rail Division supporting the Engineering Manager, Operations Manager and Engineers on a number of electrical and civil engineering design projects.
Angel Ashcroft, Engineering Manager at Poise, said: “We have been very impressed with both William and Edward. We have provided them various tasks ranging from admin support to project management type activities and technical deliverables. They have delivered every task with due diligence and maturity.”
"Their attitude and behaviours are good and they are always punctual, showing commitment, initiative and accountability. It has been a pleasure having them on placement.”
