Business and Welcome Fair 2017

As part of Freshers week, we recently held a Business Fair opening our doors to 25 top local employers including, John Lewis, The Grove and Pizza Hut head office. The Business Fair gave students the chance to quiz senior staff from local businesses, helping them get a better understanding of the opportunities exclusively available to them.

Students were easily able to apply there and then for work experience, apprenticeships or more permanent placements. The huge variety of employers who attended meant there were options for all of our students, no matter what their course of study. At the same time a number of informative talks were being held in our Business Lounge giving students advice about CV writing, interview skills and starting a business.

Performing Arts student Lydia, applied for a temporary placement at the Pump House Theatre working on their ‘October French Festival’. Talking about the placement she said: “I’ve applied for voluntary work because I love acting and I am open to doing anything, whether it’s performing onstage or helping with backstage preparations.”

Francesca Bonn, Head of Employer Engagement, organised the event and gave us her say on the day’s proceedings: “All in all it was an excellent day. Businesses responded really well to the students and a large number of students signed up to GAP placements. The event has been extremely beneficial for both the local businesses and our students.”

Marley is one of many students who applied for a placement, he said: “I’m studying an Extended Diploma in Aviation, as I want to be a pilot and I’m applying to John Lewis today because it looks like a great place to work.”

At the other end of ‘The Street’ our Welcome Fair was taking place to get students involved with a number of activities including DJ mixing, food tasting and video gaming. For those who were brave enough to face their fears, there was the chance to tackle a 40ft climbing wall.

The Welcome Fair then moved onto our Hemel Hempstead and Kings Langley campuses. Ahsan Khan Niazi, who is studying Level 2 Construction Skills, said: “I was down at the Welcome Fair for a while today and I got the chance to try out the Bungee run and the climbing wall, which were both great fun. Best of all there was free food!”

Take a look at some of the best bits from the day below.
