What will I study?
You’ll study how science can be applied to understanding and improving sports performance. Central to this is knowledge of human biology, including the structures of the human body and how it functions.
Subjects focusing on sports performance include psychology, nutrition and injury. Skills for assessing fitness and coaching sports are developed, as are more general skills needed to work in the sports industry.
Subjects studied include:
-
Applied sport and exercise psychology - develop an understanding of the major psychological factors that impact on sports performers.
-
Field and lab-based fitness testing - develop the understanding and practical skills necessary to accurately conduct anthropometric and fitness assessment protocols that establish body composition and density, identify somatotype body types and profile a performer’s fitness capacity.
-
Functional anatomy - explore how the anatomical structure and physiology of each system contributes to the production of movement of the human body in sport and exercise.
-
Applied research methods - develop a clear grasp of research methods, the different types of research, how to search for and read different examples of research, and the importance of this for emerging sport and exercise scientists.
-
Biomechanics for sport - gain an understanding of the types of motion that the human body undertakes in sport and the forces that impact on the human body, such as reaction forces, friction and buoyancy.
-
Sport and exercise physiology - explore how each system functions on its own and also in combination with the other body systems.
There will be opportunities to improve your English and maths and take part in GAP work placements. It’s also possible to gain coaching awards.
