Introduction
Motor vehicle engineering appeals to everyone with a love of cars. It’s also a sector that’s set to grow as more people buy and drive vehicles.
To become a motor vehicle technician you’ll need strong practical skills and be good at fault finding and problem-solving. You will also need to be good with people and have great customer service skills.

Entry Criteria
An enthusiasm for practical and theory, ready to learn and get hands on from day one. This course is skills-based, so the Level 1 Diploma will provide you with the fundamental understanding to progress.
You will also be invited to a Course Introduction Meeting.

What will I study?
This course is a solid introduction to the automotive industry. Training is through a mix of theory and practice in our modern workshops. You’ll learn about the increasing complexity of the modern vehicle, particularly the electronics and computing technology.
You'll develop skills in health and safety practices in vehicle maintenance, good housekeeping in the automotive environment as well as tools, equipment and materials for vehicle maintenance. From day one your tutor is here to help, with regular one-to-one sessions to plan and develop your learning.
You’ll develop your knowledge and skills in:

You’ll also be able to undertake optional units, which include the following:

Spark ignition engine systems, components and operation

Steering and suspension systems, components and maintenance (4 wheels or more)

Basic vehicle valeting

Light vehicle construction

Introduction to low carbon technologies in the automotive industry

Vehicle electrical foundation skills
Alongside your course you’ll study English and maths and take part in GAP work placements to develop your skills and confidence.

What can I do next?
Study for one year full time to complete an IMI Certificate Level 2, or continue on day release from an employer to complete the NVQ Level 2/3 in Vehicle Mechanical and Electronic Systems. Possible careers include motor vehicle technician, service receptionist and manager.
