• Entry Criteria

  To enrol on our A Level programme applicants will need to have achieved a minimum of 5 GCSE grades of 4 or above, including Grade 5 or above in English.

• What will I study?

  Students will be able to study their A Levels while benefitting from all of the added extras only available at West Herts College. Including our links to industry through GAP and Project Bravura and our outstanding support services. Choose from:

  English Literature

  English literature will see you read, critique and commentate on a wide range of heralded texts, as well as exploring different types and styles of writing. The focus is on responding to project briefs across varying specialisms, including:

  • Aspects of tragedy

  • Aspects of comedy

  • Elements of crime writing

  History

  Choose to study this A Level and delve into the history of the UK and US, gaining an understanding of the intersectionality of race, gender, class, economy and politics. This A Level is broken down into three core areas of study:

  • Britain transformed, 1918-97

  • The USA, c1920-44: boom, bust and recovery

  • Poverty, public health and the state in Britain, c1780-1939

  Politics

  Politics will see you explore the inner workings of the UK and US governments to better understand the how and why of decision making and policy at the highest level. This A Level is broken down into three core areas of study:

  • Government and politics of the UK

  • Governments and Politics of the USA and Comparative Politics

  • Political Ideas

  English Language & Literature

  This A Level will focus on the integration of language and literature and explore the relationship between linguistic and literary methods. Students will undertake the following modules:

  • Telling Stories – remembered places, imagined words, poetic voices and methods of language analysis

  • Exploring conflicts – writing about society, critical commentary, dramatic encounters

  • Making connections – explores a specific technique or theme in both literary and non-literary discourse

  Psychology

  Psychology is about how we think and why. This course will explore human-behaviour and a wide range of psychological topics. These topics include:

  • Social influence

  • Schizophrenia

  • Forensic psychology

  Sociology

  Understand how our lives and all human interactions are dictated by social, economics, political and cultural forces. Students will undertake four key areas of study:

  • Sociological theories, perspectives and methods

  • The design of research used to obtain data under consideration

  • Socialisation, culture and identity

  • Social differentiation, power and stratification.

  Law

  This course equips you with an understanding of the role of Law in today’s society and the rights and responsibilities of individuals. Students will undertake modules including:

  • Criminal law

  • Human rights

  • The nature of law and the English legal system

  Business

  A Level Business equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand how businesses are created, managed and grow to become successful. You’ll study a range of modules including:

  • Analysing the strategic position of the business

  • Managers, leadership and decision making

  • Choosing strategic direction
