Part Time Course code 0527

Develop counselling skills which can be used in everyday life as well as listening and responding skills. This course provides an insight into what counselling is about and what practitioner training involves.

  • Entry Criteria

Successful completion of the CPCAB level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills course or equivalent. Most places on this course are filled by students who have successfully completed our level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills course but we can sometimes offer places to external applicants who have completed a level 2 course at another training centre.

All Level 3 applicants will need to complete a written task and gain a reference from their Level 2 Counselling tutor. Applicants that are successful following this stage will be interviewed to complete the process.

  • What will I study?

Building on what you have learnt on the level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills course, the ‘Studies’ course is the next step in training to be a counsellor. In this one year part-time course you will learn more about counselling theory and the importance of self-awareness and ethical practice. The theories introduced on this course include Carl Rogers’ Person-Centred Counselling theory, concepts from psychodynamic theory including Freud, Erikson and Bowlby’s Attachment Theory, Transactional Analysis and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). You will also develop your understanding of yourself as well as practising and extending your counselling skills.

Tutors strongly recommend that you gain some experience of having counselling during the course, to support you in the process of personal growth that can be brought up by the topics covered. You will be encouraged to find and work with a counsellor for at least ten sessions.

  • Future Prospects

This course will help you to decide if it is appropriate for you to apply for the Diploma course. Some students find that the skills and knowledge learnt on the Studies course are sufficient to enhance their self-awareness and skills in their work and personal life. Others go on to apply for the Diploma course. Progression to the level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling is subject to successful completion of the Level 3 CPCAB Certificate in Counselling Studies course, a written task, a tutor reference and the subsequent interview process.
