Support while you learn

Student learning

Before you come to West Herts College, and during your first few weeks here, your course tutors will be getting to know you. They'll be finding out about your skills, talents and aspirations and seeing whether there are any areas where you need extra help. We will do whatever we can to meet individual needs. When you apply to College we like to know your needs so that we can support you.

Specialist support services

In addition to the support services we offer across the College we have a dedicated team with specialist skills and experience to help you achieve and succeed. This specialist support includes:

  • Learning advisers to support your learning needs
  • Specialist care advisers to support your care needs
  • Specialist learning centre staff and assistive technologies to help your learning.

Learning Support services

Support services across the College include:

  • Assessment and teaching for students with specific learning difficulties, e.g dyslexia or dyspraxia.
  • Communicators for the deaf.
  • Adapted materials for students with a disability, e.g visual impairment.
  • Note takers.
  • Specialist teaching in small groups and some individual sessions.
  • Extra support for literacy, language and numeracy.
  • Educational psychologist and teacher assessor services.
  • Plus: support, advice and information on disability and learning difficulties to students, parents/carers, colleagues and other professionals.

Your tutor can help you access the Student Support team throughout the year, whether you have a general query or need in-depth advice on a particular issue.
