Apprenticeships - the employers role
Apprenticeships and NVQ qualifications are nationally recognised
qualifications - delivering the on the job training you need for business
succeess.
Apprenticeships provide a framework of qualifications including NVQs, key
skills and technical certificates. A full Apprenticeship framework will
include:
- National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) at Level 2 or Level 3
- Technical Certificate in your industry
- Developing communication, number, problem solving, IT and
team-working skills within formal qualifications where appropriate
To achieve the full Apprenticeship, your employee will need to complete
the full framework as set out by your industry sector skills council.

How do I get involved?
The Apprenticeship programme is government funded for young
people aged 16 - 18 (Apprenticeships are available for all ages
but fees are applicable). You may have an existing employee or be looking to
recruit - the college may be able to put forward suitable candidates
- The Apprentice must be employed by your company for a minimum of 30
hours per week
- You must pay your Apprentice under the PAYE scheme
- Your employee's contract must include their College day if
appropriate - so the day studying with West Herts College is still waged
What are the costs for the employer?
- There are no costs for employers for 16 to 18 year olds
- For 19+ apprentices employers are asked to contribute towards fees by at least 50%
- There are also existing wage/salary costs
